Someone is killing the children of Moscow.

They make a strange pair - Lev, both businessman and charismatic, ruthless head of a mafia gang; and Alice, a young American woman sent to help drive Russia towards the free market, starting with Lev's massive Red October Vodka plant.

Alice finds Lev - and Russia and its fuel, vodka - strangely attractive. But the gangleader is engaged in a vicious war for control of Moscow, a city which is suffering from a spate of profoundly disturbing child murders. Caught up in his violent, corrupt world of dreadful deeds committed in the name of honour, Alice puts her marriage, her sanity and her life at risk.

But what do the bloodless corpses of the city's children have to do with this chaotic feuding? What connects the man Alice is falling for to these macabre crimes?
