Phil Hardy has written extensively about music, the music industry and the cinema. He was editor of the innovative Rockbooks series (1971-2) and co-editor of one of the first significant reference books, the three-volume Granada Encyclopaedia of Rock (1976). He is the founder of MUSIC & COPYRIGHT (1992), generally accepted as the most authoritative and objective source of information about the international music business. He remains its editor. His film books include Sam Fuller (1972) and Raoul Walsh (1974). He is also the editor and main contributor to the Aurum Film Encyclopaedias. These include The Western (1994), Horror (1995), Science Fiction (1995), Gangsters (1998) and War (2001).
Phil Hardy lives among the rolling hills of North London. He has a footballing son, a singing daughter, a set-decorating girlfriend and two cats.
