This is the first guidebook to the recent architecture of Athens and Attiki, proving that there is life after the Parthenon. It describes and illustrates a variety of work, including important buildings from the 1960s-the most important period in modern Greek architecture-and includes projects by well-known architects such Valsamakis, Manetas, Tombazis, Antonakakis, Zenetos, and Biris, and younger stars, including Sotiropoulos/Van Gilder, Kourkoulas/Kokkinou, Kontozoglou, Krokos, and Papaioannou/Issaias. The work of influential foreign architects such as Walter Gropius is also represented. The book covers a wide range of scales and projects, and explores why architecture in Athens has developed the way it has, giving an insight into the popular Greek method of building for part exchange (antiparohi), a collaboration between land owner and contractor/developer.
