Architecture has always been embraced by the Dutch on a social as well as a cultural basis, while enthusiasm for the new and a commitment to stable long-term funding has given The Netherlands perhaps the most exciting collection of contemporary building in Europe. This guide is not a comprehensive account of contemporary Dutch architecture-several volumes would be necessary to cover the incredible range of work being done in the country. Rather, the book is a personal selection of projects that exemplify the spirit of Dutch architecture today. Diversity has been the main goal, and the building types covered range from toy containers to large-scale housing and urban developments. A wide spread of practices is highlighted, from established firms to younger offices such as MVRDV and Neutelings Riedijk. And, of course, the pervasive presence of Rem Koolhaas, principal of the Office for Metropolian Architecture (OMA) in Rotterdam, is felt everywhere.
