Tony Evans was one of Britain` s most outstanding post-war photographers, who worked with equal success in both the editorial and advertising fields. He was a man of extraordinary ability and imagination, which he served with great patience and meticulous preparation. He made his mark first in the 1960s with his editorial photography, notably for the Sunday Telegraph Magazine and Tatler. Towards the end of the decade his work for advertising also began to attract attention and went on to be feted in numerous awards. In the 1970s, he became much sought after by both editorial and advertising art directors and designers with whom he characteristically formed close and productive partnerships. When his book The English Sunrise appeared, its originality assured its place as a seminal work of wit, observation and design. He began to develop an interest in natural history and the country-side, and collaborated on The Flowering of Britain and English Cottages, books that are highly regarded to this day. Despite becoming ill in the 1980s, he continued to work from his home in mid-Wales, increasingly including his love of nature. Taking His Time is the first survey of Tony Evans` s photography and testifies to the extraordinary range and skills of a man who remains one of the most ingenious talents in British Photography.
